Rob's Guide To Fish

Tip 1

Queenfish are best fished with an intermediate or sinking line.  When Queenfish are sighted working the surface, approach from upwind and cast to the area where fish are feeding.  Let the fly sink for 5 to 10 seconds before retrieving quickly, long strips.

Don't be afraid to use a small fly but make sure the hook is strong and sharp.  If the Queenfish are not attacking the fly you are using, try a smaller one.  Recently, we had to resort to Flashibou shrimps tied on no. 4 Tiemco's to get strikes from hard working schools of 3 to 5 kilo fish.

Tip 2

Longtail tuna - look for birds tight on the water, hovering and diving on chopping fish.  Motor well wide of the fish and approach from the upwind side.  When in casting distance, turn boat side on to school so the flies can be cast off one side.

Best outfit would be 8 to 10 weight with an intermediate or fast sinking line, small baitfish fly tied on a strong 2/0 to 4/0 hook, shock tippett 20kg mono or 15kg fluorocarbon tied to fly with loop knot.

Good Luck

Dave
