Rob's Guide To Fish

Buckley's Hole

Sunday the 7th of May saw  us wetting a line in saltwater on Bribie Island.  We travelled to Buckley's hole the first surf beach at the mouth of Pumistone Passage. With a 10 knot South Westerly blowing, not a cloud in the sky and the water as clear as air , the day was  perfect  for sight fishing the flats.

Reports indicated that Tailor were cashing cheques in the bait schools on shore. We started with speed four sinking lines armed with Clousers. This formula paid off in just a few casts with a spirited Moses Perch

As we moved along the flats Flathead took a liking to our flies. We hooked four Flatheads ranging from 150mm to 330mm long.

The bait fish spasmodically leapt into the air to avoid an unseen predator. Finally we saw a school of Tailor attacking the bait schools but alas they were in high speed mode only staying on the flats for milliseconds before disappearing back to the deep blue.

With just a few minutes to go before we had to leave,  a bread  chum line was deployed over the weed beds to see what was lurking about. Within fifteen minutes four large Gar had been landed.

With the weather so nice and the water so clean , flats fishing was a great way to spend a few hours on a Sunday afternoon.
