Insight Flyfishing Charters

insightflyfishing@bigpond.com

Graeme has been Flyfishing for 35 years. He has guided many international and national celebrities and features on numerous T.V.and video productions. In 1988 Australia's own Rod Harrison chose Graeme to guide International Flyfishing identity Lefty Kreh on the video Production The New Frontier featuring the legendary  saratoga of Goose Creek.  WildFish presenter and Flyfishing author Peter Morse regards Graeme as one of the pioneers of sight-fishing the saltwater flats of the N.T.  Together with his wife Dorothee they operate Insight Flyfishing Charters.  In 2000 they won the N.T Freshwater Flyfishing Tournament and 2001 The National Flyfishing Challenge at Bynoe Harbour.......................

Tip 1

Barra on the Flats.

Many Flyfishers make the comment "saw plenty but were not biting". Usually if you make the correct cast and the Barra turns to the fly,  pull it at least a foot away ,each time it tries to get closer remove the fly away again -  it's important not to let the fish touch the fly ,by continually removing the option from the fish, its natural aggression will cause a strike . My suggestion is you use a fly that is highly visible (black and silver) deceivers lightly weighted in 1/0, 2/0 and keep the fly high where you can see what's happening. Best time to fish the Saltwater flats in this area is on a dropping tide which forces the Barra out of cover...................

Tip 2

Threadfin rolling on Jelly Prawn

Getting frustrated constantly casting for little or nil results .Two things you notice, coming up with representative patterns is nearly impossible, and occasionally you get nailed out of the blue. Reason, when Threadfin are rounding up Tiny jelly (clear) prawns they extend the 5 feelers like a fence, you no this is occurring by the showers of prawns in front of them, a great indicator of direction in the dirty water. When they roll over they grab a mouthful; here they usually stop and swallow laying there feelers back briefly before continuing on again . Be ready to cast as they roll and fast strip over them often prompting a strike out of seemingly uncatchable fish usually flys such as deceivers and clousers with sparkle tend to work best.

Tip 3

Queenfish chase but won't hook up

Use the right pattern representing as close to possible what they are feeding on. Mostly you cast to these fish and they follow. Faster you strip faster they follow. Queenys often smash into bait and swim around mopping up. Cast your fly in and just move either with slow strips or occasional twitches keeping an eye on the line for any movement. Had many people cast 20ft of line then proceed to strip more line on the deck then as they go to pick up they find a fish has got hold of the fly while it was sitting in the water. The lesson in this is that it is not unusual for them to pick up slow sinking flys.

Good Luck...

Graeme
